My answer is simple. Change one thing at a time.
Many of my patients struggle with weight. They spend a lot of time and energy in a cycle of gain-loss, gain-loss. Not only is it physically harmful, but it also saps their emotional strength.
There is one way I have seen that consistently works. Change one thing at a time.
Our conscious brains are not made for multi-tasking. They like to tackle one thing at a time. And when we make that thing a habit, our brains are happier because then we don’t have to think. Our brains can then move on to the next thing.
This is not conjecture. Study after study shows that no matter what we want to change, if we do one thing at a time we will have a much higher success rate.
Here are 10 things you might want to change to lose weight. They all are tried and true ways to become healthier.
Pick one and do it for a month. By then it will become a habit, and you can move down the list to another thing to change.
- Drink more water.
- Always shop with a full belly.
- Eat breakfast.
- Don’t eat after dinner.
- Give up soda and fruit juice.
- Drink your coffee black.
- Give up fried foods.
- Go for a walk after dinner.
- Get a good night’s sleep.
- Check the nutrition labels.
There are so many little things you can change. Make up your own list.
And here’s the big change — believe in yourself and believe that you can change one thing at a time. In a few months, you will be on the road to a healthier lifestyle.
